Betsy DeVos has always been a generous woman who loves to help those in need. She co-founded the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation in 1989 and has been donating large amounts of money to charitable organizations and educational causes ever since. DeVos was recently made the secretary of education for the United States, but before she began to serve in the position, she had to reveal how much her charitable foundation had been donating to charities over the years. When the books to the foundation were opened, it was discovered that she has been a part of donating more than $185 million to various charities and the arts and culture sector. It was also revealed that the foundation had donated 26 percent of its total donations for the 2015 calendar year to educational reform causes. This amounted to more than $3 million dollars, which pales in comparison to the total amount of money DeVos has donated to the educational sector during her life.
Betsy DeVos has devoted a good portion of her life to improving the school system in the USA. It is her belief that students need more educational options because many of them are being boxed in by the current educational system that is in place. As it stands, most students in the country must attend a public school that is selected for them based only upon the zip code of where they live. This means many young students are forced to attend schools that are dangerous and not offering them a quality education. There are many American families who would like to forego all of this and send their children to a charter school or private school. The problem is these schools cost a lot of money.
Betsy DeVos has worked hand-in-hand with many lawmakers from various U.S. states to help pass the kind of legislation that will cover the sometimes steep costs of charter and private schools. Her husband, Dick DeVos, helped to pass an important piece of legislation in Michigan that helped to cover some of the fees for charter schools. DeVos was a part of efforts in Louisiana to help push through a public voucher program that helped to cover student’s costs into charter schools. She has also praised Florida for its work to pass legislation that supports its students.
Betsy DeVos was born in Holland, Michigan where she worked with her father in his auto parts store when she was younger. She attended Calvin College and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics while there. DeVos has served in various positions over the years to help improve Michigan. She served as the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party for six years and has also worked with many different educational organizations.
