Waiakea Bottled Water Hits the Market by Storm Thanks To Its 100 Percent Recyclable Packaging

Consumers tend to turn their backs on bottled water, and the action can be said to be justified. Plastic bottles are the leading solid pollutants since they create excess wastes. It is not worthwhile. However, Waiakea Water Company has changed the rules of the game by introducing a 100 percent recyclable packaging. The bottle’s design involved the addition of TimePlast. The additive lowers the lifespan of plastic from 1,500 years to about 15 years. It is a patented material and the first of its kind.

Ryan Emmons, the co-founder and CEO of Waiakea, stated that creating the bottle required approaching polymers from a different angle. To start with, scientists over the past seven decades have focused on making plastic stronger and better. Developing a degradable packaging material required looking for ways of making plastic weaker and simpler at a molecular level. He said that another factor that delayed the recyclable plastic discovery is that scientists concentrated on making plastic degradable. They did so by introducing bio-plastics made from degradable materials such as sugar cane and corn.

Waiakea’s approach was different from other past attempts. First, they degraded plastic partially to accelerate nature’s degradation process. They also turned the plastic polymer into a material that was not plastic anymore. They converted it into a carbon-based wax that is degradable.

Food Truck Event Brings in Thousands

Thousands of people walked around for the Kearny food truck festival. This is a large festival where food trucks gather to sell items to hungry visitors. While there, you can find everything from pizza and hamburgers to lobster rolls. It’s a fun event for the entire family. There were over 15 trucks displayed in the first event of its kind in the area. The reason for the event is to raise money to support 15 police officers as they travel to take part in a memorial bike ride in remembrance of 9/11. If there is excess money raised, then it will be given to local organizations in the community. This is an event to bring everyone together while supporting a worthy cause as many people still have 9/11 in mind. Tickets are sold in advance and at the event. Each truck has it’s own way of offering food to visitors to make the event as easy to navigate as possible.

A study that was recently released by the Journal Of JAMA Pediatrics explained that in schools where there is a trained chef preparing meal options, children are eating healthier. This includes both fruits and vegetables. There were some challenges with children agreeing to consume a few other healthier options such as regular white milk instead of chocolate milk. More than 2,600 students from the third to eighth grade range in two low income urban schools near Harvard University were studies. Trained chefs were assigned to these schools to come up with a new menu where fruits, veggies and low fat recipes were a priority.

Each child had their lunch tray weighed before they ate and then again when they were done. This measured how much the child had actually eaten. Bruce Karatz is aware that the study showed that when vegetables were prepared in a more appealing way they got eaten more. For example, adding broccoli or greens to a vegetable soup was more accepted by the students than if it were simply dropped on the tray whole. Not only can this information reduce waste in schools but it can also help determine what might help children eat healthier and make better nutritional choices. Children are not necessarily opposed to eating healthy but there are many schools that are not taking the time and applying the effort to making these healthy foods look and taste good to the younger crowd.
